ABOUT ME
Hi, my name is Keith and welcome to Mandabar.
I started looking into Human Longevity (Healthspan and Lifespan) a few years ago as my family came face to face with the End of Life needs of my elderly parents. I suppose, as with most people, it was not something that we spent a lot of time talking about or planning for. We thought we had plenty of time. Then my father had a stroke, and we discovered all the details about End of Life that nobody really tells you until it happens.
My dad was 85 and had already started to experience the “typical signs” of aging, and then I saw a video of a 82 yo woman deadlift 210lbs. That is when I realized that we do not need to grow old simply because we get older. The words of George Bernard Shaw came to me and I remembered the quote, “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing”.
So I became curious as to what separates the 85 yo man who can’t get out of a chair from the one who can swim the English Channel. I realized that it is largely the choices that we make, and that we can start making them at any time in our lives. The sooner the better, but the 82 yo woman didn’t start lifting until she was in her late 70s.
I began to learn as much as I could about aging and the science behind it. I researched centenarians, blue zones, senescent cells, and telomeres, etc. I looked into where research was today, and how to measure our true biological age, and epigenetic clocks. I watched, read, and learned everything I could find, and I am still learning. I managed to improve my overall health and body composition. I reversed my type 2 diabetes and hypertension. I reduced my biological age by 13 years (so far).
How Mandabar came to be
A few years later I was doing a 10 mile run with a friend of mine and we were discussing the topic of longevity. We talked about all the influencers and experts that we both watch and listen to, and compared notes on what protocols we implement and steps that we take. Then he made the comment about just being a regular guy, and not having the same resources as the influencers and the experts. He said that we need someone who is a regular guy and has a job and regular life to listen to. So, of course I said, “Why don’t you do it? You’re a regular guy”. Later that evening I thought, “Why don’t I do it? I’m just a regular guy too”.
My first thought was the chocolate bar. I decided to name it the Mandabar. Then I was having dinner with some friends and they mentioned that my family experiences provided some insight into End of Life experiences and a certain perspective. So that led me to write a book (coming soon), a cookbook, and then consulting/coaching services. “Mandabar” loosely translated is a Latin term that means “To be sent” as in on a mission. That is our mission to share what I have learned and help others improve their quality of life all the way to the end.
